The Portrait of a Lincoln

January 1, 2009 at 9:46 pm (THINKING, WHY Not, community, slavery's new legacy) (, , , , )

In any artistic beginning there is a lot of open space, the “OIL” has to be applied long after the “GESSO” has “gelled” to seal the canvas. That is why that even the “FREEDMAN” that President Abraham Lincoln Is addressing has the same tone of pigment at that moment we see here.

No discernable difference, YET.

No discernable difference, YET.

There are so many things that determine the final outcome of what is transpiring on a daily basis. Plans have ways of gaining their own personalities, like your child between the age of 0 and 7 years, they’re not quite what you had in mind but you know that they not finished yet… and there’s STILL that thing called “hope”.

There’s a lot of “gesso’ around the Lincoln Theatre at this moment, but more and more of the neighborhood are wondering when the Ocres, Saffrons, CoCoas and Raw Umbers are to make their way within the boundries that were set during the original idea.

During this re-transformation of ‘BRONZEVILLE’ many are still in the stage of “GESSO”, and haven’t been brave enough to study properly for their “graduation” to the “promise” of a life, LIBERTY and the encouragement to receive their DOCTORATE in creating that PURSUIT of HAPPINESS.

Those of African-American heritage have been lead to TRUST, almost, ANYTHING associated with the Lincoln moniker, remember the ” BLACK-XPLOITATIONAL 1970′S ?(Henry Ford’s SECOND automotive company. [ Linking Lincoln\'s] [Later in life, Ford recalled this period as one that was driven by profit rather than innovation.[8] )

Outlandish luxury is often the association of our culture.

WE WOULD have driven THIS 1955 flivver.

" WE" WOULD have driven THIS 1955 "flivver".

One question is whether or not we can and WILL accept the responsiblility for our own portraitural futures, as the MAN shaking Abraham Lincoln’s hand, Charles Wellington Reed : ‘BUGLER’= Medal of Honor WINNER… One of the FIRST. The next question is what IS the ‘PRICE’ of FREEDOM !?!
